Department for Transport Consults on Frontal Protection Laws
During the last week of February, The UK government consulted with interested parties on the new Proposal 3, which detailed the combination of 2005/66/EC Frontal Protection System Directive) (2005 FPS directive) and 2003/102/EC (Vehicle pedestrian protection Regulation) which also include brake assist within the 2007/46/EC. (2007 regulation)
This motion proposes to include the 2005 FPS directive into Whole Vehicle Type Approval and will in turn controls the aftermarket FPS requiring specific vehicle type approval, for the FPS.
One of the main features of the original, 2005 FPS Directive was the requirement for head test upon an FPS above 900 mm.
This is no longer valid within the 2007 regulation, The head test will be required in all cases, meaning that all FPS's including aftermarket will require the same level of testing, no matter what the height.
The Government reiterated during this consultation that the General Product Safety Regulation used in the UK to control the sale of FPS's and also added that under certain sections of the 1988 road traffic act, the driver of a vehicle could be breaking the law if the FPS is not fully type approved.
